Yesterday, Miro from Croatia reached out to me to see if I wanted to buy the domain www.ExecutiveCoachPhiladelphia.com. I jumped at the opportunity and bought it for a three-figure dollar amount. Today, for my son’s 15th birthday, I just purchased a gift that I think will bring him value over his lifetime: a domain with his first name and last name with the .com suffix.

Why these investments? As a business owner with a focused specialty, having a descriptive domain adds to the likelihood that my business will be found by people searching for my services. Although I have clients all over the world, and do more than executive coaching, as an Executive Coach based Philadelphia, it adds to my brand.

For my son, still in high school with no focus on career path or future plans (yet!), I want him to have the opportunity to create something in his personal patch of the almost infinite and ubiquitous internet. Shortly, I believe traditional resumes will be a thing of the past. Professionals, regardless of which field, position or industry, will need to show their technical savvy and rely on a connected network of people and opportunities around the world to forge their career path, their success and their satisfaction.

Your domain is a place to share your thoughts, talents, expertise and leadership for the entire world to see. Display your art, write your blog, show your skill in creating code or designing buildings. And, this in not something for just a new college grad, a tech professional or an entrepreneur. A vice president of marketing, a nurse, a new parent and a plumber can create and display a snapshot of who they are, what they do and how they add value – what a potential employer, customer, mentor or collaborator wants to know.

I just hopped over to GoDaddy and saw that BestMicrobiologist.com is available. Check if your name, your expertise, your passion or your profession is still available. Owning this space, your domain, gives you a voice and outlet to connect with the entire world. So, are you the master of your domain?
